mobbies awards & a spiffy giveaway.

When I started this blog two April's ago, I never, ever thought anybody would read it. I never thought anybody would read it and like it. I never thought anybody would read it, like it, and want to give me an award for it. So when a little e-mail from the Baltimore Sun popped up in my inbox with a hip-hip-hooray for this blog taking the figurative cake in the Foodie category of the Mobbie Awards, my initial response was, "Ummm....you sure?"

Of course, this only confirmed that people are actually reading this, which made me panic as to what I'd ever written that I maybe shouldn't have, then I started skimming my mental archives for posts that I would delete as soon as I got a chance, but then Justin reminded me that maybe you crazy kids stick around this neighborhood because you actually enjoy small doses of my insanity coated with copious amounts of butter and sugar.

So we jumped in the car last night for my first of four trips to Baltimore this week (yay Baltimore, boo commute) for the awards party at RA Sushi, which is really quite unlike any sushi bar I've ever been to. First, it's loud. Second, everything is bright, bright red. Third, sexy 20-somethings fill every corner of the room, holding Japanese beers and wearing impossibly high heels. I looked at Justin, and he must've seen the look of panic on my face because he grabbed my arm when my small-town toosh made a bee-line for the door.

And I'm glad he did, because I met some very fun, very down-to-earth fellow food bloggers at the party and heck, when someone says, "Hey, you're Cookie!" how can you resist? It's incredibly disarming. We talked about stuffed pumpkins, the merits of making homemade Canadian bacon, camera lenses, strawberries and all the other sorts of thing that make my toes tingle.

So, because you all are as much a part of this blog as I am, because I love ya and because I want to say thank you for all your votes and support, I'm giving away The Best-Ever Cupcake Icing Kit from Bake it Pretty to one of you! And I already have my own kit and yes, it really is the best ever. And it came with two tiny plastic ballerina cupcake toppers that I haven't had the heart to use because they're so darling adorable. And I love the icing tips - they are bit and fat and pipe a perfect swirl onto your cupcakes every single time. Each tip is about 2 inches long with a 3/4 inch opening for maximum frosting pleasure. Oh, yes.

Here's what you'll get:
  • Round Tip
  • Star Tip
  • Closed Star Tip
  • French Tip
  • One 14" pastry bag made of lightweight, double-coated polyurethane with a reinforced bottom, stitched border and hanging loop.
  • Glossy 4x6 postcard label with instructions and helpful tips!
To enter to win, become a follower of If You Give a Girl a Cookie and leave me a comment telling me what your least favorite Thanksgiving food is. Mine is that awful sweet potato casserole with marshmallows on top, I know, sacrilege, but still, it's like eating baby food.

No entries after 1:00 p.m. Friday EST, please. The winner be chosen at random and announced this Friday afternoon, so be sure to check back. Okay, on with the show!

  1. Brittany, love your posts, they always make me smile, you may have a food network job as the comic cookie queen! (so much for a contessa),
my least favorite Thanksgiving food - gel cranberries, oh the whole ones are so much better and talk about your baby food, yuk, like tart, cold, nasty baby food. Well there's my entry, happy choosing!

  2. Stuffing. There's just something about the texture. Blech.

  3. Yay! Congratulations! I actually found your fabulous blog because of the Mobbies.
You want a bad Thanksgiving food? Mine is the suckotash. Blech. I came to dinner for the turkey, potato, dessert and maybe a little cranberry sauce. Not this green stuff. Thanksgiving is not a day to eat healthy!
BTW I've never had the sweet potato casserole with marshmallows, but my aunt makes a WONDERFUL one with spices, sugar and pecans. It's like eating a sweet potato pie without the crust. But I can see where it could taste like baby food.

  4. My mother thinks it's "traditional" and "harkening back to the olden days" when she makes Tomato Aspic each Thanksgiving. Who wants to eat savory Jello...let alone TOMATO FLAVORED savory Jello! EEEW.

My coworkers and I LOVE reading your recipies! It gets us through the 3pm doldroms each day during our 9-5!

Congrats Brittany, you totally deserve the award and all the accolades that go along with it. I would have to say my least favorite thanksgiving item is a toss-up between canned cranberry sauce and green bean casserole. I hate the sound that the cranberry sauce makes when you dump it on a plate, and the fact that it’s a gelatinous, canned shaped “fruit sauce” with no fruit in sight makes me shiver. As for the green bean casserole, I love green beans and I even like the onion top but I can’t take the creaminess of the dish.

BTW, I tried becoming a follower but I never received confirmation so I hope it went through. At least I get notifications through Yahoo.

  6. Okay, I have to chime in, this is hilarious, the hatred for Thanksgiving staples, I love it.

Katie - tomato aspic? Oh my, I just want to give you a hug. Nobody should have to eat that. [Cringe.] Have your mother call me, that's just uncalled for. Glad you and your co-workers enjoy it, thanks for reading!

Nicole - I don't know the logistics of "following" because I usually add blogs manually to my Blogger Reader, so I wouldn't fret too much. And I totally hear you on the slurping sound that happens when you take the cranberry sauce out. Once, when I was younger, I was trying to get it out of the can and onto the plate and I finally slammed the can and it shot out and onto the floor. I'm a winner.

  7. um... seriously anything other than pecan pie with whipped cream is just taking up critical stomach space. but I can't get up enough gumption (did I just write that word?) to hate anything on thanksgiving. except soggy gummy gelatinous stuffing. now that I think of it, that is horrid.

    and congrats on the award!

  9. So, I was going to go with the sweet potato casserole. I completely agree. But I'd like to say that I can think for myself - and i think i'd rather eat someone's freshly made sweet potato casserole than a can of cranberry sauce any day. Especially when you just slide it out of the can and display it on a plate for everyone while it still holds the shape of the aluminum can. Nope, not doin it.

  10. Oh how cool! I wondered if you would beat out Coconut and Lime (another Balto food blog I like) and you did! Very nice!

Ugh. It has to be that darned jellied cranberry sauce. The texture, the taste...it's all so very, very wrong.

  11. Congratulations!

Do Thanksgiving desserts count? Because I think pecan pie is the pits. I don't get it...nut pie...pie full of nuts. Blech.

  12. Brittany,
YOU ROCK! But you knew that. I strive to be half the baker you are, but I am not as patient. I am so very proud of you. My least favorite Thanksgiving food? Tie- sweet potato mush and green bean casserole- marshmallows are disgusting and green beans should NEVER have to touch mushrooms or milk. ICK.

  14. I knew you were going to win the day you announced you were in the running!! Congratulations!! ;)
I love your blog and the easiness you create to your recipes.
A lot of your followers are stating they can't stand the classic sweet potato casserole or green bean casserole recipe. That has to be some of my favorites but i guess it also has to do with family memories!!
I personally have a tie with cranberry relish (specifically from the can) and brussels sprouts. I gag at the site of both!!

Can't wait for your next recipe!!

My least favorite is the cranberry sauce, especially the wiggly stuff in the can. By the way, we had sweet potatoes with marshmallows on them for supper. Yum!

  16. My least favorite Thanksgiving food - that canned cranberry sauce that jiggles and slides right off the plate! We never have that though, so my least favorite thing that is actually on our table - deviled eggs.
